Braces Q & A

by Donna Chang, DDS, MS

How Do Braces Straighten Crooked Teeth?

Braces are comprised of brackets and wires or ceramic that are attached to the teeth to gently coax them into their desired position over time.

How Will Braces Affect My Daily Routine?

Braces make it more difficult to brush and floss. Although it is more difficult, Dr. Chang will show you the proper technique to maintain good oral hygiene throughout your treatment.

Dr. Chang recommends that patients avoid foods that are high in sugar, as well as, foods that are hard or sticky. Hard candy and sticky foods can get trapped on the braces and, in some cases, pull them off. Sugar that is not flossed or brushed away can lead to cavities, decay, and the discoloration of teeth.

What Different Types of Braces Are Available?

The major types of braces include:

  • Metal braces - Traditional, stainless-steel braces have been proven to work very well in orthodontic treatment. Metal brackets hold a thin wire held in place to put gentle pressure on your teeth and guide them to the desired positions.
  • Ceramic/Porcelain braces - These braces blend in with your teeth and are not as visible as metal braces.
  • Lingual braces - These braces are custom-made at a dental laboratory and bonded behind your teeth, making them invisible to others. Currently, we do not offer this type of braces.
  • Invisible braces / Invisalign- Invisible braces utilize a series of removable plastic aligners that are custom designed to gently move a patient’s teeth over time. While extremely popular, Invisalign is most effective in correcting minor to moderate issues.

When is a Removable Functional Appliance Used Instead of Braces?

Removable functional appliances are used to remedy alignment issues when limited movement is required. They can help to close the gaps between your teeth or move a single tooth. Any more significant dental issues will require braces or Invisalign.

Dr. Chang examines each patient before deciding on the appropriate treatment modality and creating an individualized plan. Whichever approach is implemented, she is committed to ensuring that treatment progresses as quickly and smoothly as possible.
